Does the vaginal discharge as egg white mean that I am ovulating?

When it comes to vaginal discharge, women can expect some variations in hue, odor and consistency throughout their menstrual cycle. Most of the time the flow is transparent and elastic, similar to uncooked egg whites, but other times it is white and thick, with a consistency very similar to body lotions. In general, vaginal discharge indicates the stage of the menstrual cycle, whether we are fertile or not.

What does a whitish secretion mean like egg white? Is it a cause for concern?

Definitely not. As ovulation approaches, you will begin to experience a creamy discharge, significantly thinner than the dry but still very dense discharge. Its function is to capture and filter abnormal cells or low quality sperm before they reach the uterus to ensure that only the strongest and most viable ones join with the ovum. During ovulation a more elastic and elusive type of flow is released, which can make the vagina wet and sticky. Because of its much thinner consistency, this white flow similar to egg white allows the sperm to travel energetically into the uterus and join with the egg. It is considered a very fertile type of flow, so it is very likely that you become pregnant if you have unprotected sex in those days. The peak of fertility is reached the day before releasing the egg or the day of ovulation.

Physical activity usually causes a clear and watery vaginal discharge, which can dampen underwear and even pants. It is advisable to use only cotton underwear, as it allows the skin to breathe and maintains better air circulation.

Another common occurrence of white and watery vaginal discharge is during sexual intercourse. This discharge serves to lubricate the vaginal opening and to moisten the lips in order to make the penetration more pleasant for the woman. The lubricant flow usually comes from the Bertholin and Skene glands, which are located above the vaginal opening. The more excited the woman is, the more lubrication she will produce.

This flow can also occur in the case of a vaginal infection, for example fungal infection, bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted diseases. However, it is usually accompanied by other distinctive signs such as bad smell, irritation or vaginal itching. On the other hand the consistency tends to be much more dense.

What do I do if I have vaginal discharge like egg white?

Keep in mind that your vagina produces up to 30 times more flow during ovulation, you should not worry if your underwear feels wet and sticky. The best way to find out if the discharge is normal is by calculating your ovulation date. Normally, ovulation occurs between days 12 and 14 of the cycle.

If you are not ovulating, pay attention to any abnormal (unpleasant) odor, discomfort or unusual sign. If you experience symptoms of burning, itching, redness, irritation, you may have an infection. It is good to see a doctor and get analysis of vaginal samples. If an infection is detected, follow the doctor's instructions about the treatment.
