High Uric Acid: Know the Symptoms and Treatments

Symptoms of High Uric Acid
Among the substances naturally produced by the body, uric acid appears from the result of the breakdown of the purine molecules, after being used in the body. In this way, part of the uric acid is eliminated by the kidneys and another part remains in the blood.
Concern is that uric acid levels in the blood may rise due to increased production or interference from the use of some medications. The consequence is the formation of crystals that are deposited in various places of the body. In addition, elevated levels of uric acid also increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (1).
The pain and swelling in a joint are the main symptoms of high uric acid in the blood, which arise due to the accumulation of crystals of sodium urate.
This occurs most often on the toes, but the pains can also affect other joints like knees, ankles, wrists and the fingers.
In addition, uric acid when it is high causes redness and difficulty of movement in the affected joint; chills and low fever and peeling of the skin in the affected region. Symptoms may be related to kidney malfunction such as back pain and burning when urinating.
In the kidneys, elevated uric acid rates are responsible for the formation of renal stones (renal lithiasis) and acute or chronic renal failure (uric nephropathy).
It is caused by lifestyle and food choices. Currently, processed and industrialized foods are consumed in excess. But, these foods contain high fructose corn syrup, which is believed to be a major contributor to uric acid (2).
A recent study showed that men who consumed two or more sugary drinks per day were 85% more likely to develop uric acid than men who only consumed less than one sugary drink per month.

The study also showed that half of people who have high uric acid levels are obese or overweight (3).

Food & Beverage
A healthy and natural diet is the key to lowering the levels of this acid in the body. For this, you should cut some foods from the menu:
>> Foods rich in purines - purines are an amino acid that forms uric acid. Foods that have purines include: shellfish, small fish, mushrooms, organ meats, peas, lentils and spinach.
> Fried foods and hydrogenated oils - such as soy, vegetables, corn and canola oil can aggravate gout.
>> Sodium - A diet high in sodium can cause swelling of the tissue and increase the symptoms of gout.
>> Alcohol - increases uric acid and liver toxicity. Avoid drinking alcohol, especially beer that is rich in purine (5).
>> Refined Carbohydrates - Sugar and other refined carbohydrates can make insulin resistance and increase uric acid.
Foods to Lower Uric Acid Levels
In contrast, you can make use of the following rich foods in:
>> Fiber - High fiber foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds that are rich in fiber, which can help reduce uric acid.
>> Potassium - Potassium rich foods like avocados, kefir milk, coconut water, salmon, pumpkin, bananas and apricots can help balance intracellular fluid to relieve gout.
>> Fresh berries and cherries - Berries and especially cherries can help neutralize uric acid.
>> Omega 3 - fish wild-caught and rich in omega-3s help reduce the levels of uric acid in the body and the discomfort it causes (6).
>> Liquids: drink at least 2 liters of water per day;
>> Vitamin C: foods rich in vitamin C help in the elimination of uric acid by the kidneys and prevents the appearance of kidney stones. Therefore, I consume more orange, acerola, pineapple.
>> Magnesium: Magnesium is an alkaline mineral and can also decrease the formation of uric acid in the body, and studies show that magnesium is an effective treatment for the problem (7).
>> Diuretics: increases the consumption of diuretic foods as they help to eliminate uric acid from the body. Natural diuretics are ideas for maintaining the health of the body. They are: cress, celery, cucumber, carrot, beet, eggplant, peppers, tomato, onion, garlic, apple, orange, pear, watermelon, melon, blueberry, lemon, among others.
Foods such as peas, lentils, chickpeas, asparagus, spinach, mushrooms and cereals should be consumed in moderation as high consumption raises uric acid levels in the body.
In addition to diet, include in your routine time for physical exercise. Whether it is a walk, jogging, weight lifting, yoga or pilates, exercises are the best way to keep the body healthy (9).
Lowering uric acid involves lifestyle changes that must occur before opting for pharmaceuticals or other methods.
So, opt for a real food. If you get rid of things like excessive alcohol, sugar and grains; and if you add a higher diet to fruits and vegetables, you will see your body's uric acid levels drop considerably.
